Franz Werfel's "Comedy of a Tragedy," as "Jacobowsky and the Colonel" is subtitled, is brilliant. It is Werfel's best play. This piece was created between 1941 and 1942, following a daring escape by the 50-year-old Werfel through various countries in Europe to America. Its narrative draws from the experiences of the Prague author and the stories of an emigrant named Jacobowicz. Thus, it is an authentic drama, a contemporary piece about France in 1940, and a document for the Jews who were pursued across all continents. Moreover, it portrays the story of two human opposites.
