Salomon Perel, known as Sally, was born in Peine near Hanover, where his parents owned a shoe store. The Perels were Jewish and fled from persecution in Nazi Germany to Poland. In 1939, the Germans invaded Poland, and the apparent safety was gone. "You must live!" said his mother to Sally, and with some luck, he managed to cross the border river into the Soviet-occupied part of Poland. However, two years later, the Wehrmacht also advanced here. Sally confronted the German soldiers and pretended to be a "Volksdeutscher." This was not untrue, even though to other Germans, a Jew was not considered one. Sally concealed his Jewish identity, was taken to Braunschweig, and apprenticed at Volkswagen. As a Hitler Youth, he survived while most Jews were murdered. In this book, told from Sally's first-person perspective, photographs—mostly from Sally Perel's private collection—document the stages of his adventurous survival.
