150 years of German migration history. Jochen Oltmer, one of the leading experts on international migration in Germany, explains, together with Nikolaus Barbian, who completed his doctorate under him, that many people have always migrated to and from Germany or moved within the country. For instance, during the German Empire, numerous Poles migrated to the Ruhr area, while hundreds of thousands of Germans emigrated to the USA. The Nazis forced many people into exile; by the end of the war, Germany had to accommodate millions of displaced persons, but even in the 1960s, guest workers were brought to Germany, whose children often identify as German. And this is far from the end of the story of migrations. Christine Rösch has poignantly and sensitively illustrated how our world has changed over the last one hundred and fifty years.
