A hundred years ago, the lynx was nearly extinct from our forests. Humans ruthlessly hunted it as a competitor – using traps, poison, and firearms. Additionally, its living conditions were increasingly stripped away: the forests were heavily exploited, the lynx's prey was declared fair game, and its roaming areas were dramatically reduced. Today, the reckless deforestation is a thing of the past. Forest areas are steadily increasing again, and roe deer, stag, and wild boar are experiencing a renaissance: in many regions, there has never been so much game before. With plenty of forest and prey, bears, wolves, and lynxes have a better chance, as long as humans allow it. And humans are most likely to let them be where they don’t interfere too much – such as in the vast expanses of the Bohemian Forest and the Bavarian Forest.
