Swiss media under the microscope. For the sixth time, the Yearbook Quality of the Media – Switzerland Suisse Svizzera is being published in 2015. Since its first edition in 2010, the editors have been measuring the quality of around 50 information media from German-speaking Switzerland, Suisse romande, and Svizzera italiana. The yearbook, along with separately published studies and reflections, provides a basis for a critical debate on the role and performance of information media in Switzerland through scientifically grounded analyses. The editors, including the media sociologist Prof. Dr. Kurt Imhof, who passed away in spring 2015, continue to pursue this goal relentlessly. The digitization and globalization of the media system, as well as the ongoing structural weaknesses of Swiss information media, are the key processes described in the sixth Yearbook Quality of the Media. Once again, media usage, the economic foundations of information media, the development of ownership structures and media concentration, media policy debates, and the evolution of the quality of information journalism in the three major language regions are systematically examined. The Yearbook Quality of the Media – Switzerland Suisse Svizzera is produced by the fög – Research Institute for Public Communication and Society / University of Zurich. It is supported by the Foundation for Public Communication and Society. Its aim is to strengthen the awareness of media quality in Switzerland. The yearbook serves as a fundamental source of information for media professionals, leaders from politics and business, academia, and all interested parties who wish to engage with the development of both traditional and new information media and their content.
