After the period of restrictive minority policies in the People's Republic, democratic Poland has embraced its minorities since the political upheaval of 1989. Overall, there has been a positive development in legislation, as well as increased attention to minorities from both politics and the public. Particularly regarding the recognition of Germans in Upper Silesia as a national minority and the initial apprehensions on both sides, the situation there can now be considered relaxed, aside from occasional issues. The Polish state provides significant financial resources to support the preservation of the cultural and national identities of members of national and ethnic minorities. The Yearbook Poland 27 addresses both historical and contemporary developments of minorities living in Poland.
