Product details

"The Quest for Socialist Utopia" by Bahru Zewde is an in-depth analysis of the Ethiopian student movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The book highlights the role of this movement as a central opposition force against the imperialist regime in Ethiopia and its influence on the country's political and social development. Zewde, a former student and now an emeritus professor of history, uses interviews with former student leaders as well as documentary sources to outline the radicalization of the movement. Particularly after 1965, there were annual demonstrations that culminated in the adoption of Marxism-Leninism. The book also addresses the division of the movement abroad and its consequences for Ethiopian society. Zewde is known for his extensive work on the modern history of Ethiopia and provides a valuable contribution to historiography with this work.
