The author, Nicolas Bouvier (1929-1998), grew up in Geneva and began traveling to France and Italy at the age of 16. After studying humanities and law in Geneva, he drove in 1953 through Yugoslavia, Turkey, and Iran to Afghanistan. In 1955, he continued his journey to Japan. He returned to Switzerland in 1956. In the 1960s, he undertook several extensive travels, including trips to Japan, China, and Korea. The writer, photographer, and journalist published numerous books.
