Aging as a Challenge. In public debates, aging and old age are increasingly taking on important roles. The demographic shift, the aging of society, and the resulting problems and questions necessitate that nearly all academic disciplines engage with this topic. Should we intervene in the aging process? How should aging be understood? As a disease that can be "cured," or as a natural process that should not be influenced? This handbook takes a broad perspective on the life phase of old age as well as on the biological and social phenomenon of aging. It consolidates findings from gerontology, biogerontology, and geriatrics, and expands them to include anthropological, cultural studies, cultural philosophy, as well as moral philosophy and ethics.
