The choice of the right handwriting styles for learning to write is widely discussed not only in primary education pedagogy but also in public discourse. Eva Odersky examines how these handwriting styles develop during elementary school years. Through an empirical study in which the handwriting of over 300 children was digitally recorded and subsequently analyzed, the author demonstrates which styles children use by the end of the 4th grade and whether they write fluently and automatically. Additionally, the study investigates whether connected, semi-connected, or unconnected handwriting is written more fluently and whether handwriting might even have an impact on academic performance.
