In a moment of media history where film appears not only in cinemas but across all media, this volume uses the work of French director Jean-Luc Godard as a starting point for a multifaceted reflection on the stories and futures of cinema. More than any other director, Godard has endeavored to write the history of cinema within the medium itself, as seen in his monumental film essay Histoire(s) du cinéma. And more than any other director, Godard has repeatedly posed the question of what comes after cinema: How the history of art continues after this "invention without a future," as Louis Lumière once put it.
