Yvan Goll, born in 1891 in Saint-Die/Vosges, is considered a German-French classic of the 20th century. He studied law in Strasbourg but had to flee to Switzerland in 1914 as a German-French citizen. There, he encountered the Dadaists, who significantly influenced him. He had friendships with James Joyce, Stefan Zweig, and Hans Arp. In 1919, he moved to Paris, where he became one of the leading figures of the surrealist movement. Yvan Goll died on February 27, 1950, in Paris.
