Hugo von Hofmannsthal worked on his late medieval mystery play, conceived as a stage piece, since 1903. The world premiere took place in 1911 in Berlin under Max Reinhardt, and since 1920 it has been performed at the Salzburg Festival, founded by Hofmannsthal and Reinhardt. The central character is the wealthy Everyman, who is confronted by Death at a feast, leading him to God's judgment seat. However, no one wants to accompany Everyman on his difficult journey, and his wealth is of no help. It is only when he is reminded of his good deeds that he returns to faith and thus to God's grace.
