The book was first published in 1984 and serves as an initial documentation of personal memories of the resistance struggle of the Carinthian Slovenes, as well as the living conditions under the Nazi regime. The narrative, written by Thomas Busch and Brigitte Windhab based on tape recordings, is not an epic of heroes. It is the life story of an ordinary woman who refuses to be defeated. A contemporary version of Mother Courage, who trusts more in the cunning and perseverance—the weapons of those who have been oppressed for centuries—than in the technical superiority of the enemy. And it is, through Jelka's life, the story of the Carinthian Slovenes—their persecution, their resistance, and their discrimination. A story that is not yet finished.
