The prophet Jeremiah is unique in that he is entrusted by God with responsibility for nations and kingdoms. This universal mission reflects a new understanding of God and simultaneously clarifies a changed perception of prophecy in the Old Testament. The Book of Jeremiah encapsulates aspects of earlier great figures such as Moses, Amos, Hosea, and Micah in the person of the prophet Jeremiah. We learn as much about his life as we do about none of the other prophets. It is primarily a path of suffering, culminating externally in persecution and the danger of death. But even worse are the prophet's loneliness and the pain of God's rejection by the people, which tear Jeremiah apart internally. However, the book named after him also bears witness to a new salvation that blossoms amid destruction. This is hinted at right in the first vision.
