Product details

In chapters 49-54 of the Book of Isaiah, passages about Zion and texts about the Servant of God alternate continuously. The still widely accepted individual interpretation of the Servant is consistently replaced in this commentary by a collective one, which ultimately leads to a redefinition of the subcomposition Isaiah 49-54. In Isaiah 49, the Servant presents himself as a witness, messenger, and proclaimer of JHWH, whose message, however, meets with great skepticism in Zion. The Servant seems to fail with his message of comfort (Isa 50), and the hostility against him intensifies to the point of experiencing death (Isa 53). In contrast, JHWH promises to ensure the success of his Servant and to raise Zion in splendor (Isa 54). The chapters conclude with the first mention of the "servants" in the final verse of Isaiah 54.
