Budapest is deeply influenced by its Jewish history. In his introduction, the editor traces the tumultuous history of Budapest's Jewish community, from its beginnings in the Middle Ages to the present day. The literary and autobiographical texts gathered in this volume also tell this story. Works by György Konrád, György Dalos, and Ágnes Heller are presented alongside those of Hungarian-Jewish authors who are now forgotten or less known outside Hungary; many of the texts appear here for the first time in German.
