On September 30, 1938, all Jewish doctors had their licenses revoked. Nevertheless, remaining Jews had to receive medical care when they fell ill, especially because the labor of Jewish forced laborers was needed. "Aryan" doctors were not supposed to provide this care, as the Nazis had a vague fear of contagion and prohibited contact between "Aryans" and Jews. However, there were no Jewish doctors left. Thus, a new construct was needed: the medical caretaker. Most medical caretakers were deployed in Berlin. For this study, information on 368 medical caretakers was gathered for the first time. All these helpers in great need were an important support for sick or injured Jews during a dangerous time. However, they also found themselves in difficult ethical dilemmas.
