Hebrew-English Tanakh-PR-Student Guide
English, Jewish Publicat Jewish Publicat, 2001Product details
The JPS Hebrew-English Tanakh contains the oldest known complete Hebrew version of the Holy Scriptures, presented alongside the renowned English translation by JPS. Its well-designed format allows for easy reading, featuring clear text, an engaging and efficient two-column layout that enables readers to quickly switch from one language to another, as well as an organization that will be familiar to contemporary readers. The Hebrew text of this Tanakh is based on the famous Leningrad Codex, the Masoretic text attributed to Aaron Ben Moses ben-Asher, circa 930 CE. Ben-Asher researched all available texts to create an authoritative biblical manuscript. In 1010 CE, his work was revised by Samuel ben Jacob, a scribe in Egypt. Long lost for centuries, the manuscript was eventually discovered in the mid-19th century and became known as the Leningrad Codex. This edition adapts the latest BHS edition of the Leningrad text by correcting errors and providing modern paragraph structures. The English text in this Tanakh is a lightly updated version of the celebrated JPS translation from 1985. Wherever possible, the results of modern studies on the languages and culture of the ancient Near East have been applied to the biblical text, allowing for an English style that reflects the biblical spirit and language rather than the era of translation. This edition also includes an informative preface that discusses the history of Bible translation and focuses on the latest JPS English translation of the Holy Scriptures. It is the result of a 30-year interdenominational collaboration of esteemed Jewish biblical scholars. Readers are sure to appreciate one of the most intensive projects in the history of the Jewish Publication Society.
