Few personalities from the Middle Ages attract as much interest today as Joan of Arc: Johanna of Orléans (1411-1431), the peasant girl from Domrémy, felt called to fight against the English in light of the impending defeat of the French in the Hundred Years' War. She accompanied the French army and played a significant role in the liberation of the besieged Orléans. After the victory at Patay, which enabled the coronation of Charles VII, she fell into English captivity and was accused of witchcraft in 1431, ultimately being burned at the stake as a heretical witch. As Heinz Thomas shows, contrary to later stylizations, Joan was not a religious mascot but was rather equal to military strategists in battle. Her story, filled with betrayal and intricate intrigues, leaves many questions unanswered, such as the mysterious hesitation of Charles VII.
