Heka, the magic of the Egyptians, was a magic of the spoken word. The spells that the priests wrote on papyrus scrolls unfolded through loud recitation. Gods were brought into existence and sustained by the utterance of their names. But one day, the gods were no longer called upon; they sank into oblivion and fell into a deep sleep. Even the script in which the scribes wanted to preserve and pass on their names was forbidden and ultimately forgotten. It was only with the deciphering of the Rosetta Stone in 1822 BC that a glimpse into the long-lost high culture of Egypt became possible again. We, who pronounce the ancient names, should be aware that we bring them into existence and therefore should have a rough idea of what we are bringing forth and what connection we are creating.
