Product details
Literary critics have long debated whether the Silesian poet Johann Christian Günther, who lived from 1695 to 1723, created early examples of subjective lyricism following the peak of rhetoric in the 17th century. Following earlier studies on Günther's love and lament songs, Laura Bignotti now focuses on his spiritual songs. As she demonstrates, the poet often offers a personal, if not autobiographical, reinterpretation of traditional motifs even in sacred lyricism, despite the enduring presence of traditional elements of Baroque poetry. While the youth poems primarily exhibit a somewhat unoriginal yet skillful imitation of their models, later works testify to an individual development in the approach to religious themes. This evolution, influenced by Pietism, becomes evident in the increasingly conscious and original representation.
