Product details

It was the magnificent castle and the extraordinary story of the noble lord Ivan Erasmus Tattenbach that inspired Josip Jurcic to write the first Slovenian historical novel. It is considered the first Slovenian feuilleton novel. In it, the author recounts the suppression of the Croatian-Hungarian "Zrinj-Frankopan Conspiracy" against the Habsburg crown, marking the 200th anniversary of the event. Tattenbach is portrayed as weak in character, naive, and self-satisfied, only looking out for his personal gain, tactically ingratiating himself with the Habsburg-opposing Croatian and Hungarian rulers, and ultimately getting caught up in the intrigues of the magnate conspiracies, betrayed by his chamberlain in 1667. Josip Jurcic's Tattenbach is the first historical novel written in Slovenian in the style of the feuilleton, infused with the spirit of W. Scott. With this work and the first Slovenian novel The Tenth Brother, Jurcic became the leading storyteller of his time. The novel was published in Slovenian as a serialized work in 1873 in Slovenski narod. In German, it was published as Johann Erasmus Tattenbach. Historical Novel from the 17th Century of Styrian History in 1912 by B. Beaufort in Prague. These translations are particularly valuable today as they were created close to the time of the novel's inception, and they often capture the spirit of this literature more deeply, illuminating the mood of that era, with only slight adjustments made to the orthography to suit modern reading habits.
