Product details

Johann Peter Hebel is part of the legacy of classical German education. "Kannitverstan" and "Unverhofftes Wiedersehen" stand as masterpieces of his "Calendar Stories" in every reader's book, exemplifying a literature that is both artful and close to the people. His fame was enhanced during his lifetime by Goethe's judgment, stating that Hebel was the first to succeed in conveying the Enlightenment's worldview in "the most naive, graceful manner" within the peasant and petty-bourgeois milieu - just as the groundbreaking new quality of Hebel's poetry lay in reflecting the recognized "construction of the world" within the confines of rural life. However, at his core, Hebel was a fractured character who suffered throughout his life from the early death of his mother. Bernhard Viel takes this life trauma as the starting point of his portrayal and shows that the traumatic experience of death is central to K.
