Long before hope became socially acceptable in the new Christian liberation theology and as a Marxist principle of hope, Péguy discovered the centrally Christian position of the second divine virtue in a wonderful poem in 1911 - one of his three Mystères. The poet, who returned from socialism to Christianity, celebrated in the first Mystère the sacrifice of a person (Joan of Arc) for all in the following of Christ. Here, in the second, Joan silently listens to the speech of her friend Gervaise, who embodies the spirit of the Church and shows her that hope has its ultimate seat in the heart of God himself, but is also the foundational reason for all Christian, indeed all human life. This most mature poetry of Péguy must be classified among the enduring treasures of spiritual literature.
