The double novel by Georges Bernanos, The Fraud and The Joy, was created nearly a century ago. In the first part, originally titled The Darkness, one might see a derivative of The Devil's Advocate, though the accents are shifted: The main character in The Fraud is, like Abbé Cénabre, a representative of the Church, a priest who discovers that he no longer believes and succumbs to this disbelief. His statement, "I have lost God, therefore I have lost nothing," allows Bernanos to depict the realm of evil in its deepest depths. Behind the curtain of religious conventions, this possessed man acts as if God exists: pride, fear, lies, and hypocrisy characterize this new Judas, who has shed his past and knows no hope; he calls his own house hell. He rejects the church's offer.
