Product details

The booklet "Eschatology in Our Time," published for the 100th birthday of H.U. von Balthasar, demonstrates that the foundational orientation of Balthasar's eschatology was already established in principle in 1955. Notably, this manuscript reveals that Balthasar understands death as a disruption and fragmentation of life. He decisively distances himself from idealistic interpretations that view death as the culmination of human freedom's history. In just a few strokes, he outlines the necessary shift from a cosmologically dimensioned eschatology to a personal-Christological one. Rather than designing a "topography of the afterlife," where heaven, hell, and purgatory are clearly defined places, the eschata are interpreted through Jesus Christ, the resurrected crucified one, who is both the judge and savior of humanity.
