Catholicism can be regarded as the most important, certainly the most impactful work of Henri de Lubac. In France, it was the greatest success in theological literature, marking a decisive turning point, indeed a quiet revolution: from a legally closed to a pneumatically open understanding of the Church. The subtitle of the work was The Social Aspects of Faith: it was thus about depersonalization, about the biblical-patristic fundamental idea of solidarity between God and all of humanity, as it finds its lasting expression in the Church. From this work, the themes of de Lubac's other writings - from the Church Fathers to dialogues with Eastern religions and atheism, and leading to his friend Teilhard de Chardin - become comprehensible in their diversity. The title of the first German edition (Catholicism as Community) contained an unjustified narrowing, which is why it was replaced with another title that aims to convey the original openness.
