What is Christian about Christianity? Never in the history of the Church has the reference to a multitude of mysteries to be believed satisfied as the ultimate answer; there has always been a point of unity aimed at, from which the demand of faith can be justified: a Logos, although particular, yet convincing and even overwhelming, that breaks free from the contingent truths of history and imparts necessity to them. Miracles and fulfilled prophecies may play their role (their interpretative power seems significantly diminished since the biblical criticism of the Enlightenment), but the reference point they point to lies beyond them. The time of the Church Fathers, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance, whose influences extend to the present day, have set the reference point in a cosmic-historical context; modernity since the Enlightenment has shifted to an anthropological center. While the first attempt is historically limited, the second is systematically flawed: what God wants to say to humanity in Christ cannot be normed either by the world as a whole or by humanity in particular; it is absolutely theo-logical, better yet, theo-pragmatic: the act of God towards humanity, an act that explains itself before humanity and for it (and thus first in it and through it). It must now be stated that this act is credible only as love: it refers to God's own love, whose manifestation is the glory of God.
