Suddenly, one appears. No one knows where he came from. He seems to have no name, no past, cannot write or speak, and does not understand any of the questions posed to him. Such a person appeared in September 1844 on Alp Selun in the upper Toggenburg. He was perhaps sixteen years old, almost naked, mute. Since no relatives came forward despite a wanted notice, he was interned in the poorhouse. He received his name from the place where he was found, Selun, and the patron saint of the municipality of Alt St. Johann.
