Augustine's massive commentary on the Psalms is undoubtedly his most personal work, and also his most mature in terms of the depth and variety of his ecclesiastical and pastoral experiences. Externally, it has a certain formlessness: brief notes on individual Psalm verses alternate with lengthy sermons and treatises. However, the inner form is all the richer: the intricate relationship between Christ and the Church. Here, only a glimpse of the multifaceted work is offered, yet it allows one to sense the richness of the whole, which remains inaccessible to most readers as such.
