The traditional image archive is increasingly complemented by its virtual counterpart on the internet. The digital transformation has led to a ubiquitous presence of dematerialized images, but above all to new processes of storage, organization, and archiving of photographic and post-photographic material. In parallel, entirely new formats have emerged: social networks, microstock photography, artist and exhibition archives, or media art practices have generated image repositories that, among other things, have developed high availability as well as previously unknown forms of connection, and thus of semantic and re-semantic processes, while their principles of organization are often opaque.
