Unlike before World War II, cigarettes are now perceived as a health-damaging pleasure or addictive substance. For about fifty years, they have been under fire from criticism, yet people continue to smoke. But why is the cigarette considered an addictive, cancer-causing, and deadly risk product? How did this cultural and political image develop, and which actors were involved? To what extent did the material and immaterial product language of the white cigarette relate to this transformation process? This book explores the health discourse surrounding smoking and the associated image and product changes of cigarettes in the Federal Republic since the 1960s, leading up to smoke-free substitutes in the early 21st century.
