The behavior of women and their spatial experiences in public urban spaces are among the areas of investigation in European Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology. This work addresses, against the backdrop of a qualitative study, the (in)securities and feelings of women in the urban space of Graz. The emotions and strategies described by the women are revealed to be social constructions that reinforce and continuously recreate existing gender norms. It is shown that the reference systems of gender and city are reproduced on one hand through discourse and on the other hand through action.
