The volume includes 16 essays by a group of internationally recognized authors who strive to contribute to a clearer understanding of the complex facets of Jacob Jordaens' work and to distinguish it from the works of Rubens, van Dyck, and his contemporaries. The title "Genius of Grand Scale" refers to the spectrum of history paintings to genre scenes, as well as Jordaens' preference for large formats. The size of the artist Jacob Jordaens must also be acknowledged, as even the fact that he outlived Rubens by four whole decades could not free him from his shadow. Through references to iconographic and iconological studies, not only are individual works identified and presented in a broad overview, but the long, often fragmentary reception of his artistic output also forms a significant part of the interpretations presented here. Additionally, technical investigations of the paintings are included.
