Product details
Published by Gloria von Stockar with an introduction by Johannes Zeilinger. At the beginning of pilgrimages (4th-7th century), the experiences of solitude and threat as penance, as well as death in the Holy Land as a goal, were at the forefront. However, since the Crusades and group pilgrimages, a change in the significance of the journey can be observed: After successfully reaching the destination, God was expected to return the pilgrim home healthy, enriched with earthly and heavenly goods. The councilor Stockar from Schaffhausen undertook three pilgrimages: to Compostela, to Rome, and to Jerusalem. During this time, the patrician made notes about the sea voyage, about Rhodes and Cyprus, the Holy Land, but also about the revolutionary Reformation, European everyday life, and the peasant wars of the 1520s. Stockar's colorful reports from the evening.
