Salmen Gradowski was a member of the Sonderkommando at Auschwitz, the group (not only) of Jewish prisoners who accompanied the victims to the gas chambers and had to burn their bodies after the gassing. Some of them recorded the crime in detail and buried their testimony on the camp grounds. The first, incomplete part of Gradowski's notes, hidden in a bottle, was found in 1945 on the grounds of the extermination camp Birkenau by soldiers of the Red Army and was published for the first time in Warsaw in 1969. The second part, hidden in a can, was sold by a Polish finder to Chaim Wollnerman, who lived in Auschwitz, and who emigrated to Palestine in 1947, publishing the testimony privately only in 1977.
