Product details

"Jews are dying in Europe and they are being buried like dogs." This is how the letter concludes in which Hannah Arendt informs Gershom Scholem in October 1940 that Walter Benjamin took his own life while fleeing from the Nazis. In times of great threat, a correspondence begins, driven by a commitment to the work of their mutual friend, and it will always keep the world of European Jewry in view from New York and Jerusalem. On behalf of the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, whose goal is to rescue the Jewish cultural assets stolen by the Nazis, both Hannah Arendt and Gershom Scholem travel to Germany for the first time in the early post-war years. This largely unknown chapter in their history is documented beyond the letters by previously unpublished reports from Hannah Arendt's trip to Germany in 1949/50. It was published in 1963.
