Product details

Ralf Albrecht's work explores the function and significance of rhythm in the boundary-setting practices of youth against adults through music, dance, and physical and motorized movement. Central attention is given to the communicative rhythmic acceleration within the youth cultural context, which is expressed, for example, in pounding techno beats, exuberant breakdance performances, risky skateboarding, or fast-paced parkour. Based on communication psychological research on interaction synchrony and interaction rhythm, the author develops a model of youth rhythm distinction. From this foundation, he traces its development throughout the 20th century. In addition to examining the wild youth cliques and the swing youth in the first half of the 20th century, as well as the hip-hop and techno cultures of the 1990s, the study focuses on the West Berlin juvenile delinquency riots from 1956 to 1958 within the framework of a qualitative content analysis.
