Product details
Marie Springer (1826 - 1907) describes in her memoirs the life alongside her husband from the founding of the company in Berlin's Breiten Strasse in 1842 until the death of Julius Springer in 1877. She recounts the story of the rebellious young bookseller who revolts against the press laws and is consequently sentenced to three months of fortress imprisonment, as well as the citizen who serves as a representative in the Berlin city council during the 1848 Revolution. We learn details about the life of a bookseller who brings his inventory to bloom and builds a notable publishing house through diligent work. Family life is lively, and the circle of bookselling colleagues and liberal party friends is large. In addition to establishing a versatile publishing house, Springer always finds time for extensive vacation trips to Switzerland and stays in the spa towns of Central Germany. Highlights of this active life are also addressed.
