The novel "Tjaz," published in 1972 in what was then Yugoslav Slovenia and only appearing in German translation in Austria in 1981, tells the story of a boarding school student who rises up against authority with the ability to scratch objects from a distance, is expelled, and commits suicide on his first day of freedom. Florjan Lipus is a Carinthian Slovene who attended the gymnasium at the episcopal boys' seminary in Tanzenberg – just like Peter Handke, who made the novel known in his home country through his translation. Handke writes: "Tjaz is a character unlike any other in novel literature: not a rogue, not an innocent, not a developing character, not a hero, not a victim, not an accused, not a stranger, but less and more than all of that: a 'cosmic being' – a 'being,' but 'cosmic.'".
