When Henry David Thoreau decides in 1857 to traverse the primeval forests of Maine with a friend, he hires a knowledgeable Indian without whom such an adventurous journey would not have been possible. The man's name is Joseph Polis; he has a canoe and is just the right person for the perilous path through the woods, swamps, and lakes. Equipped with the necessary provisions and appropriate clothing, they set off on their journey through the uncharted land. It is a journey on which Thoreau learns much, not least from the Indian by his side, who knows how to combine ancient wisdom with the benefits of civilization. He realizes what the language of nature can convey to him when he learns to interpret its signs and listen to its many voices. It is an exceptionally colorful, often cheerful depiction from the time of true discovery of America.
