Geopolitics is back in fashion. There is talk of gas pipelines as lifelines, of the amputation of territories, and of the desire to establish a land bridge to an enclave. States are evidently viewed in analogy to life forms: it is not states, but life forms that lack the air to breathe, require more space, or suffer from territorial losses like a mutilated body. Even the godfather of geopolitics, Rudolf Kjellén, regarded states as "geographical organisms." These develop, like all life, in a specific environment, and for a Darwinist, it follows that they engage in a struggle for existence and adapt to their respective surroundings. Thus, land powers are different from sea powers. Space becomes a primary evolutionary factor, indeed, a political actor.
