Product details

The friendship between a young German woman and a Polish Auschwitz survivor. Katarina Bader writes about her friendship with the Polish Auschwitz survivor Jurek Hronowski. From the perspective of the grandchild generation, she describes the difficult reconciliation between Germans and Poles after World War II. In February 2006, Jerzy Hronowski, known as Jurek, died under mysterious circumstances in his apartment in Warsaw. It was only at his funeral that Katarina Bader realized how lonely her friend Jurek had been in his final years. At the age of 18, she had met the nearly 80-year-old at a youth meeting center in Auschwitz. From this organized encounter, a friendship developed that changed her life: Jurek helped her learn Polish and advised her on everything from heartbreak to where to find the best potato pancakes.
