The concept of frame has experienced conjunctures in a wide variety of contexts over the past decades: in anthropology and sociology as a context-sensitive frame for action (Goffman), in theater studies as a frame for staging (Fischer-Lichte), in literary studies as a paratextual framing (Genette), in linguistics as a cognitive representational frame or script (Minsky), and, not to be forgotten, in art studies as a pictorial frame (Stoichita). In this context, any attention to framing (Luhmann) is initially in a state of tension between the two.
