The 20th century was shaped by a multitude of movements and counter-movements, political upheavals, and crises. The two World Wars, the rise and fall of various dictatorships, such as Nazism and Stalinism, the Cold War, the emergence of new social concerns, and efforts toward democratization represent just a small, albeit politically significant, snapshot of what has structured the perception of what is considered ideal today. At the same time, particularly in the last century, doubts about the universality and immutability of ideals became evident.
