Product details

With the concept of "Eingedenken," Walter Benjamin developed a multifaceted figure of thought, the significance of which has long been recognized, especially in relation to his later writings, and cannot be underestimated. This book attempts for the first time to illuminate, from earlier uses of the term (particularly by Ernst Bloch), its appropriation and comprehensive "refunctioning" in Benjamin's work in a genetic and systematic manner. "Eingedenken"—already defined by Bloch as an involuntary memory of the future lying dormant in the past—enables, from this perspective, not only the "Copernican revolution of historiography" in the "Passagenarbeit," but also plays a key role in Benjamin's literary-critical works since around 1927. The concept of "Eingedenken" engages with the mémoire involontaire, awakening, citation, and study.
