The fascinating pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) were in many ways an expression of her traumas. An almost fatal accident at 18, health problems, a turbulent marriage, miscarriages and childlessness: the painter transformed her personal strokes of fate into revolutionary art. In her self-portraits, Kahlo looks at the viewer with courage and challenge. She refused to take on the role of passive victim and instead processed her experiences into a hybrid surreal-real language of life, consisting of hair, roots, veins, tendrils, tentacles, and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also deal with the political ideals of communism, which Kahlo shared with her husband Diego Rivera. The artist herself describes her paintings as "the most honest and truthful thing I could do to express what I felt inside and outside.
