This book provides an impression of the atmosphere and events of the last Kieler Woche before World War I. The events are narrated chronologically, intentionally using the historical present tense to allow readers to participate directly in the happenings. The summer of 1914 seems to be peaceful. The Kieler Woche begins as a cheerful event. However, the martial aspect is already at the forefront. In the countless encounters between German and British officers and politicians, it becomes palpable—despite the varied exchange of pleasantries—that a military confrontation is actually inevitable.
