In many elementary school classes, some children speak not only German but also at least one other language. The instruction for German as a Second Language (DaZ) learners differs from that of a monolingual student body. These children bring unique resources that should be utilized in the classroom. However, they also need opportunities to specifically enhance their language skills. Based on the specific conditions of this group for (language) learning in German classes, the author presents ways to promote language development both within regular lessons and in separate sessions. Through the close connection of theory and practice, this volume offers a comprehensive overview and ideas for teaching. It addresses both the peculiarities and challenges of the German language as well as the language acquisition of monolingual and multilingual children.
